The day of the family dinner party comes faster than expected. I'm nervous to bring Kailee. I don’t wanna cause her anymore stress. Adam’s attack triggered something in her and finally, the effects of her recent trauma are getting to her. Or she’s unable to fake it anymore. I’ve been with her as much as possible. I don’t know who’s more freaked: her or me. The only time we’re at peace is behind the closed doors of our homes. Those times are amazing. She dances, we eat, watch movies, cook, have amazing sex. Life is perfect. It’s when we leave that problems arise.

Kailee’s fidgeting. She has on that black t-shirt dress of hers with black sandals that have seen their day. She needs clothes. I want to get her so much, but I don’t want to cross the line. I don’t wanna make her feel bad or overstep a boundary. We’re still fairly new. We’re not married. If we were, this woman wouldn’t need anything ever again.

“What if I mess things up?” she asks, biting her nails.

“They’ll love you,” I tell her, pulling her hand from her mouth.

“I hope so. I know how much your family means to you.”

“Kailee Daniels, baby, I won’t let you feel uncomfortable and I know no one will judge you off first appearances. That’s not my family. You’ll see. Trust me. I got you. I got you,” I repeat on a whisper, kissing her.

She nods. “I trust you.”

“I appreciate that. You need a good time. After the awkward, uncomfortable first moments fade, I think you’ll have a great time and my mom’s the best cook. I told her you were vegetarian so they did forego the typical Texas barbeque. I want you to experience her cooking.”

“You didn’t have to do that!”

“I did. No one cares. My family wants everyone to enjoy, participate, and have a good time. They’re the best people you’ll meet. They’d be really upset if I didn’t tell them. Trust me.”

“If you say so.”

“I do. We should get going; I don’t want to be late. Hunter will take that role for me. Plus, once you meet them some of your anxiety will ease. You’ll see. Let’s rip the band-aid off.”

For both of us. It stresses me out to see her uncomfortable. I wanna make sure no one overwhelms her. I want that initial introduction to already be over. I hate the thought of her feeling like she doesn’t fit in, because everyone with a decent heart and an empty stomach can fit in with my family.

The drive over is quiet. Kailee’s little leg is bouncing in the seat next to me but there’s nothing I can say to ease her anxiety until she’s there and can see them all face to face to know they’re kind people. It seems time goes by in a blink and soon, we’re at my parents. I feel guilty for being so excited because I know Kailee is stressing. I can’t wait to see my siblings though, especially Iris.
